Book Review- Solitary

Book Review- "Solitary", Travis Thrasher

First off, this book is a religion-based mystery/thriller. Travis Thrasher is a Christian author. Whether you agree with his views on religion or not, however, this book is phenomenal. I've read it twice.
The story follows Chris Buckley, who has just moved with his mother back to her home town of Solitary, North Carolina. Upon arriving he notices Solitary isn't like any other town. It has deep-rooted secrets, and a one big walking secret is the gorgeous, yet troubled Jocelyn. As Chris becomes more involved with the town of Solitary, as well as with Jocelyn, he realizes there is way more to this town than he thought, and soon his life is threatened.
This book is the first of a series. I have yet to read the second, but I ordered it and it is on its way.
Travis Thrasher writes the novel so perfectly. It's just corny enough to make it sound like it's being narrated by a slightly snarky sixteen year old. It has humor, along with sweet scenes, but that being said, if you are easily spooked this book may not be for you. This novel has a very dark theme and overall is a bit of a gut-wrencher (I cried a few times), and the ending will leave you shocked and wanting more. This book is perfect for spooky season (October).
I also enjoy this book because there is nothing inappropriate about it. It gets tiring hearing so much about lust or a swear word or offensive term on every page. I'm happy that this book doesn't have any of that, so if I wanted to loan it to a friend or teacher I could do it without worry.
I would give this book a solid 9.5/10. My only reason for the half point subtraction is that at some points some sentences can sound a little too cheesy for me and I mentally cringe, but not in a super bad way. I still love the book. It perfectly encapsulates a love story, a mystery, and a bit of a horror aspect all in one, while still staying true to the author's beliefs.
